I did an artist Study on JL Hirten (CoyoteMange) for my botanical studies in art class.

I think her work is the best and I found her through deviantART.
If you’re not already watching her -

The piece was a response to:

Glad to see the artist that made the original works you responded to is supportive : D (she commented below me).
This sounds like a good artistic exercise, finding works of an artist you admire and doing response pieces. Not trying to mimic them exactly, but turning their work into your own. I think it can really help strengthen someones style.

Yeah Hirten is really awesome. I adore her work and she was very cool about this.
That’s what we do a lot of the time in art class, make responses to other artists we like and study their work and examine / analyse their style and look at develop concepts. We then use that knowledge to create final pieces. I’ve done a few other artists on dA like Stefan Thmopson (a few times) :iconstefanthompson:, Kchilt :iconkchilt: and Ryohei Hase :iconryohei-hase:
It does help. Through doing these responses in particular I learnt to work with more muted colours and really understand the anatomical differences between
different breeds of canine. I heard someone once call the way most people draw dogs on dA and fa as ‘cookie cutter dogs’ because all the species looks the same, which I thought
was probably the right word to use, aha. After that I really wanted to look into observing properly from real life rather than through other artists. CoyoteMange observes everything very well from life and uses it.

I like that term, 'cookie-cutter dogs.' They really do look very similar : P
I really must try making responses to artists. Its a phenomenal exercise. Thanks for explaining what you've gotten out of it and sharing some artists : )
